Siobhan I’Donnell for Physiotherapy Canada Magazine

Fit to Play Tennis in it’s second edition has updated information and research presented in an applied and practical format suitable for both the coach and tennis athlete. Being an Applied Sport Scientist I am constantly asked by coaches for up-to-date sport science information that is presented in simple terms that can be easily digested by the coach. I am confident that this book is one of the few that bridges the gap between research and application for players and coaches of all levels who are passionate about their tennis. I recommend this book as an important reference in preparing the tennis athlete.

Wayne Elderton Tennis BC Head Coach Conductor for Coaching Certification

The cover of the book says it all practical tips to optimize training and performance. I was impressed with the way this book dealt with so much material so concisely, and yet presented in a way that everyone could adapt to their own situation. I found it to be educational, explaining the why and wherefore rather than being strictly prescriptive.

The emphasis is always on prevention rather than on cure but provides information on cure just in case. With sections on nutrition, mental training, over training and recovery, outsmarting your injuries and tapering and peeking for major tournaments it is an extremely comprehensive guide. The section that I found most innovative and interesting with general training concerns which includes chapters on hydration, jetlag, altitude, heat and visual fitness.

Pam Olley for Tennis Ontario

The intended purpose of Fit to Play-Tennis is to educate tennis athletes, coaches, parents and members of the sport science team on all aspects of training and competing in the sport of tennis. The book provides a wealth of specific information on tennis training but it’s concepts and principles apply to many sports. Topics include mental training, goal setting, player rituals, “core” fitness, self screening and treatments, traveling fitness and medical kits, jet lag and much more. This book is well organized and comprehensive. It serves as a great introductory manual and gives excellent insights into life on the professional circuit.
