Ski Canada Magazine

The opening chapter sets the tone for the rest of this well written, and scientifically based guide to skiing faster. The chapter is titled “Producing a Better Skier and Athlete”. The manual does a great job of combining the science and the art of ski training by providing both detailed technical fitness advice, as well as numerous statements of positive reinforcement for the skier, who’s willing to step up to the workouts. While this manual should definitely have a place of honor on every coaches book shelf. It’s also a valuable volume for every skier who wants to perform at his or her best.

The Vancouver, physiotherapist and fitness coach to Canada’s World Cup stars has crafted a comprehensive user-friendly guide to getting in shape for winter. Useful for elite athletes, as well as Joe Blow skier. Lots and lots of photos demonstrate technique. Detail is deep yet un boring. Particularly clever, boxed, large-print, callouts, delivering pithy advice from the author. Our advice: Buy this book before fall- and your pre-season training time is over.

This book gives a great overall picture of the different aspects of training required to become a finely tuned skier. It is set up as a training guide and an educational tool for coaches, therapists and athletes. I have enjoyed this book very much, and even if I have traveled with the Canadian Freestyle Ski team for over 10 years I have learned from it. I think that it can also be very useful resource for Physio’s that don’t necessarily have an athletic or coaching background. To me it is a complete, very practical and user-friendly document and even if it is Ski specific, some chapters can easily be applied to other sports.

As the title indicates, the book focuses on dryland training designed to produce a better athlete and skier. The table of contents indicates the completeness with which the authors have addressed their topic. In addition to being comprehensive, I found the book to contain up-to-date information on training and conditioning concepts based on sound scientific principles. I believe the book has particular value for coaches, athletes and sports-specialist health professionals who professionals. Although attention and application are focused on skiing, the principles and discussions are broad enough, so they could be applied to other athletes as well. I found the book easy to read and practical.

Ski Canada Magazine

An excellent read, and a very useful source of reference. It covers some pretty basic stuff and makes suggestions aimed specifically at recreational skiers-but also has some of the very detailed step-by-step guidelines for competitive skiers.  The book scores highly in that it’s easy to find your way around the basic topics, has a wide range of suggested options for stretch training, cardiovascular and strengthening work, and gives an interesting insight into areas, such as nutrition and psychological training.
